General Information

The Institute of Physics of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and the Committee of Physics of Polish Academy of Sciences are organizing the seventh edition of the conference on Biomolecules and Nanostructures.

The conference encompasses a broad range of the topics on the crossroads of molecular biology, physics and chemistry, including

  • intrinsically disordered proteins
  • protein folding
  • assembly of protein complexes
  • aggregation
  • interactions between nucleic acids and proteins
  • dynamics of biomembranes
  • hybrid structures
  • and phenomena at bio-nano interfaces

The 2019 conference on Biomolecules and Nanostructures takes place in the Kashubian village of Pomlewo (Hotel Kozi Gród, 25 km south-west of Gdańsk). The area is generally known as Kashubian Switzerland: it is full of lakes that are located among picturesque hills. The Kashubian language, distinct from Polish, is still spoken just 10 km west of our venue, and many Kashubian family names, like Tusk, are in usage.

We continue our peripatetic tradition of the six previous meetings under related names, such as “Structure and Function of Biomolecules” or “Biomolecules and Nanostructures”, that were held in the village of Będlewo near Poznań, in 2004, 2006, and 2011, in Pułtusk near Warsaw in 2013, in Jaroszowice near Kraków in 2015, and in Podlesice in Polish Jurassic Upland in 2017. Whatever the choice of a small-village location, the goals of the conference remain similar. The first is to provide an active forum for cross-disciplinary discussions among specialists coming from different fields of biomolecular science and bio-related aspects of nanotechnology. The second is to share the current research findings in these very active and rapidly evolving branches of research. The third is to present both experimental and theoretical approaches used in the bio- and nano- studies. The fourth is to generate an opportunity for developing scientific and personal contacts in a non-distracting, non-urban setting.

The Biomolecules and Nanostructures 7 conference is organized under the auspices of the Division of Physics in Life Science of the European Physical Society. Previous editions of this conference have gained a good feedback from the participants. We hope to provide an informal and creative atmosphere and nature of the meeting, contributing to integration of the scientific community and to the fun of doing science.

The dates are May 15 (Wednesday) - May 19 (Sunday), 2019.

The registration is open. Please register here.

Abstract submission  for poster presentations was open until April 14th, 2019.

A few short talks (15 min.) have been selected from the abstracts.

The abstracts book will be issued within the Europhysics Conference Abstracts series published by the European Physical Society.

Best-poster award

European Physical Society has sponsored one poster prize of an amount of 200 EUR for a poster prepared by a PhD student.

Travel grants

European Physical Society has sponsored a travel grant of 500 EUR for an invited speaker, and three travel grants of 350 EUR each for students at a European institution, who present a contribution during the conference.

The EPS Invited Speaker is Dennis E. Discher from the Biophysical Engineering Labs, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, U.S.A..

The travel grants for young researchers funded by the European Physical Society together with the full conference fee waiver from the conference organizers have been awarded to:

  • Sylwia Berbeć from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Poland
  • Łukasz Mioduszewski from the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland
  • Agnieszka Karczyńska from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Gdańsk, Poland

How to get there

The nearest airport is the Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport

You can also get to Gdańsk from Warsaw or Poznań by express trains (~ 3 h).

Conference Buses

The buses will pick the group up on May 15th (Wednesday) at about 15:45 (adjusted to the 15:24 arrival of the train from Warsaw & Cracow). The pick-up place is a small parking lot in front of the main entrance to Gdańsk Główny Railway Station near the Mc Donald’s restaurant. The journey takes about one hour.

A group of our Helpers will travel by this train and lead the group from the platform through the train station to the bus pick-up place. Another Helper will wait at this place from 15:30. They will all display the conference posters.
The buses can stop there only briefly, just for the pick-up.

After the conference, on May 19th (Sunday), we will arrange for a bus transportation from the hotels (Kozi Gród and Venus) to Gdańsk Główny Railway Station, at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Please, sign in a selected list of travelers at a given hour at the hotel reception desk or conference office.

Individual transfers are arranged for the Invited speakers and Members of the Advisory Board in both directions, if necessary, e.g. directly from/to the Gdańsk Airport. For this purpose, please, send us the details of your arrival by plane or train.

Individual assistance with getting to Pomlewo and back to Gdańsk is possible, if required. Please, contact the conference office (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

If you want to take advantage from the group transportation and did not select this need in the registration form, please send us the time of your arrival.
